First Day of School
Whew! This is a big day. My best word of advice to my scientists and their parents - don't be too stressed. All of the 5th grade teachers know what you are going through. If you have difficulties in any aspect of this new environment, please let us know. We are patient and understanding. We expect only a few things:
5th Grade Science Standards
The following are a listing of the basic DoDEA curriculum standards for 5th grade science. If you would like to view or download the complete listing of standards (and the indicators being used to identify student proficiency), please follow the link I have provided through the title of this posting.

5th Grade Science in Bobcat Labs
Science will likely seem different in this 5th grade class than how you have experienced science in K-4, and possibly other 5th grade science classes. We will be doing science as science should be done, first-hand. We will be experimenting, observing, questioning, researching, writing, reading, and doing math.
An aspect of Bobcat Labs with which incoming 5th graders might not be familiar is the use of science notebooks. A science notebook is a collection of all the things that a scientist has learned, observed, questioned, etc.... In Bobcat Labs, we use a science notebook in just that way. The best science notebooks for beginners are usually the style that are known as composition books. However, spiral bound notebooks work well also. Evaluation and Assessment
We all must be accountable for the things that we do. In Bobcat Labs, that means all scientists will be evaluated and assessed on a regular basis. The evaluations and assessments in Bobcat Labs occur in many fashions, using the standards provided in the left column as our guide. Here are a few of the ways Bobcat Labs' scientists are assessed throughout the school year:
Scope and Sequence
Sometimes it can be a little confusing to try and read the "Standards" for a class and fully understand what they mean. In some DoDEA schools, the teachers might teach the material in the order of which they are listed in the standards. However, in reviewing the standards I recognize a logical sequence in which the material should be learned, where the information from one unit helps understanding in units that follow. Here is list of the units in the order they will be learned by the 5th grade scientists:
